The definition of “hosting” does not describe one service, but a set of services which provide various functions to a domain name. Having a website and e-mails, as an illustration, are two separate services even though in the general case they come together, so most of the people think of them as one single service. In reality, each and every domain has a number of DNS records called A and MX, which show the server that manages each particular service - the former is a numeric IP address, that specifies where the website for the domain is loaded from, while the second one is an alphanumeric string, which shows the server that deals with the e-mails for the domain address. For example, an A record can be 123.123.123.123 and an MX record would be mx1.domain.com. Whenever you open a site or send an e-mail, the global DNS servers are contacted to check the name servers that a domain has and the traffic/message is first forwarded to that company. If you have custom records on their end, the Internet browser request or the e-mail will then be directed to the correct server. The reasoning behind using separate records is that the two services work with different web protocols and you could have your site hosted by one provider and the e-mails by another.

Custom MX and A Records in Web Hosting

If you have a web hosting account from our company and you want to direct either your site or your e-mails to an alternative provider, it's going to take you literally simply 2 clicks to do this. Our Hepsia CP comes with an easy-to-use DNS Records tool, where all your domain names and subdomains will be listed alphabetically and you will be able to see and edit the A and/or MX records for any of them. If you choose to use a different email provider and they ask you to set up more MX records than the default 2, it is not going to take more than a couple of mouse clicks either to add them. Also you can set different latency for these records and the lower the latency, the greater the priority a particular MX record will have. The propagation of any record that you modify or create is not going to take more than several hours and if needed, you'll also be able to set the so-called Time-To-Live value, which shows how long a record will stay active after it's changed or deleted.

Custom MX and A Records in Semi-dedicated Hosting

With the Linux semi-dedicated hosting which we provide, you will have full control over the records of all domains and subdomains you add in your hosting account. You can easily check what A and MX records each of them has from the DNS Records section of the Hepsia hosting CP and modifying any record takes just a couple of clicks. If you choose to switch your web or email hosting provider, you can edit the necessary record and point your domain name to the other company for one of the services, while you still continue using the other one through us. You may also keep the main domain address here, while you edit the A record of only one of its subdomains. When you're modifying the MX records and you need additional ones on top of the default 2 we have, you can create them with ease and set a different priority for every one.
